Self-willed is weak-willed

Have you ever wondered why we call someone who is self-willed “strong-willed”? Shouldn’t it be the opposite? Proverbs says one who cannot control their spirit (i.e., who cannot say no to themselves) is like a city without walls. (Prov 25.28.) A city without walls isn’t strong. On the other hand, is there anything that requires more strength than saying, “Not my will, but Thy will be done”? (Luke 22.42.) Who do you admire more in a book or movie, the one who always says yes to themselves to get what they want or one who says no to themselves to do what is right? Which one is weak, and which one is strong? It doesn’t take any strength to do what you want. It takes real strength to do what you should. And none of this is lost on God (Eccl 12.13-14; Rom 2.6-8).
