Matthew Sermon 35 – The Needs of Israel; the Needs of Mankind (Mat 9.18-35)

Israel is dead and needs new life so she can respond to God, she is blind and needs new eyes so she can see the light, she is mute and needs new lips so she can speak God’s praise both to God and to the world. This is the message of the final four of ten miracles Matthew focuses on in chapters 8 and 9 of his gospel. This is Israel’s condition after centuries of God’s grace and blessing. She needs a new kind of deliverer and a new kind of salvation. She needs Jesus. And so does the world. Israel, you see, was a priestly nation, which does not mean merely that she was really religious; it means that she, as a microcosm of the human race, represented the human race. Thus, Israel’s condition is the world’s condition, and that is helpless. And Israel’s need is the world’s need, and that is Jesus.  Only Jesus – God in the flesh, God on the cross, God raised from the dead – only Jesus can help the helpless, give hope to the hopeless, and save the unsavable. I hope you enjoy the sermon. Thanks for listening. –Alan Burrow
