Of all the verses that speak to why the Son of God came into the world, 1 John 3.8 is certainly the most succinct: “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” Vintage John, this verse is short and simple, but it contains a world of meaning. In one sentence, John has summed up the entire Bible—and all of world history—from Genesis 4 onward. It is the story of God’s glorious intentions, how the devil hijacked them, and how Jesus destroyed the works of the devil, thus restoring God’s glorious intentions.
