Matthew Sermon 46 – Mat14.1-36 – Jesus, the Church, and Stormy Seas

Matthew will end his gospel with Jesus’ notice to the disciples that He has received all authority in heaven and on earth, with His command for them to make the nations His disciples, obedient to all His commands, and with His promise to be with His disciples always, even to the end of the age. (Mat 28.18-20.) As the apostles went forward, we know that even in the first century, as recorded in Acts and the epistles, they encountered misperception and persecution from powers and authorities, obduracy and unbelief from the people of Israel, and often faltering faith amongst the disciples. In the midst of all that, I imagine the apostles thought back to the events of our text, where Jesus encountered the very same obstacles, and in all showed the power and love to pray for His disciples, to provide for them, and to protect them, and in this way to carry His Church and His kingdom forward over all obstacles and opposition. And in so doing, Jesus proved Himself to be the Son of God and brought His disciples to where they worshiped and confessed Him. In these events, Jesus provided a preview of how He would be with His disciples throughout Church history, how His disciples should respond to Him, and how He would bring His Church and His Kingdom to prevail in history. I hope you enjoy the sermon. Thanks for listening. -Alan Burrow
